The date of publication of the first edition of the Recueil de plans, elevations & coups de divers ancien edifices de Paris, generally known as 'Le Petit Marot' to distinguish it from the larger format suite called 'Le Grand Marot' (q.v.), is uncertain, but it probably belongs to the 1670s (see Mauban, Marot, pp. 99--107). In 1738 or a little later Jean Mariette brought out a second edition of the work, rearranging and numbering the plates and altering or expanding some of the captions; a third, much expanded edition was published by Jombert in 1764 as Petit œuvre d'architecture de Jean Marot (q.v.). BAL 2048 notes that Mauban is misleading in his suggestion that a range of 112 to 115 plates is to be expected with up to three (unspecified) plates considered optional. Most copies including the BAL one include 122 plates; many copies further have between 2 and 12 additional plates of chimney-pieces, portes cochères and portes en placard (see British Library copy, shelfmark 61.d.5; this suite of additional plates is also described in BAL 2049). Eleven of these are present in the Soane copy, which lacks one of six unsigned plates captioned 'Porte en Placard'. BAL Early printed books, no. 2048.
