CABINET DU ROI
[Chasteaux du Louvre et des Tuileries.]
[Plans, élévations et vûes des chasteaux du Louvre et des Tuileries.]
[Paris]: [Imprimerie Royale], [1727 or later].
[11], 29 engr. pl. ; 48.8 cm. (2°)

This untitled collection of engravings of the Louvre and Tuileries represents one of the 23 volumes that make up a complete set of the 1727 edition of the 'Cabinet du Roi' (see BAL Early Imprints Catalogue, no,518.D). It consists of forty plates in two series: an untitled and unnumbered series of eleven plans, elevations and views of the Louvre and Tuileries, and a numbered series of 29 engravings of details of their interiors. The plates in the former series are signed as engraved by Israël Silvestre (six dated between 1668 and 1673), 'J. Marotte', i.e. Jean Marot II? (three dated between 1676 and 1678), Jean Bérain I (one dated 1674), and Sébastien Le Clerc (one dated 1677). The latter series consists of 28 plates (numbered 2-29) prefaced by an engraved title-plate (numbered as pl. 1) reading Ornemens de peinture et de sculpture, qui sont dans la Galerie d'Apollon, au Chasteau du Louvre, et dans le grand appartement du Roy, au Palais des Tuilleries. Dessinez et gravez par les Srs. Berain, Chauveau, et le Moine. This title-plate is signed and dated 'I. Berain delin.' and 'G. I. B. Scotin Sculps. 1710' but the engravings to which it refers date from between 1670 and 1677.

Louis XIV's important chalcography collection, known as the 'Cabinet du Roi', was established in 1663. In 1670 the prints of the 'Cabinet' began to be issued under the aegis of Colbert in a series of volumes designed to showcase the Sun King's patronage of the arts and sciences. Continually updated, this series did not achieve definitive form until 1727 when engravings from the 'Cabinet' were re-arranged for distribution by royal gift in bound sets of 23 folio volumes, the contents and arrangement of which were described in a separately printed catalogue entitled Suite et arrangement des volumes d'estampes, dont les planches sont à la Bibliothèque du Roy, Paris 1727; a further catalogue of contents was issued in 1743 under the title Catalogue des volumes d'estampes, dont les planches sont à la Bibliothèque du Roy, Paris 1743 (see Millard I, 46). For a description of a complete set of the 1727 issue see BAL, Early printed books, no. 518 and 518. A-U. Soane acquired three other volumes of 'maison royales' plates from the 'Cabinet du Roi', one of which includes an earlier issue of nine of the plates of the exterior of the Louvre and Tuileries present in this volume (q.v.).
