CABINET DU ROI
[Maisons royales. c. 1727]
[Autres plans, profils, élévations, et vûes de differentes maisons royales]
Paris (Place), [Imprimerie Royale],, [1727 or later].
[26] engr. pl. ; 48.2 cm. (2°)

An untitled series of [26] unnumbered 'Cabinet du Roi' engravings, consisting of plans, elevations and perspectives of the royal châteaux and gardens at Vincennes, St.-Germain, Fontainebleau, Monceaux, Chambord, Blois and Compiègne, as well as the Palais-Royal and château de Madrid. The series corresponds to that entitled as above in the Suite et arrangement des volumes d'estampes, dont les planches sont à la Bibliothèque du Roi, 1727 and as described in BAL Early Imprints Catalogue (BAL 518.N). In copies assembled earlier than this these plates were usually combined with a similar collection of engravings of the Louvre, the Tuileries and other royal buildings (q.v.).

Louis XIV's important collection of copperplates, known as the 'Cabinet du Roi', was established in 1663. In 1670 prints from the 'Cabinet' began to be issued under the aegis of Colbert as part of a series of publications designed to showcase the Sun King's patronage of the arts and sciences. Continually updated the 'Cabinet' engravings did not achieve definitive form as a set of 23 volumes of engravings without letterpress until the publication in the 1727 descriptive catalogue cited above. A further catalogue of the contents of the 'Cabinet' was issued in 1743 under the title Catalogue des volumes d'estampes, dont les planches sont à la Bibliothèque du Roy, Paris 1743 (see Millard I, 46). A set of the 1727 issue is described in the BAL Early Imprints Catalogue (see nos. 518 and 518.A-U).

It is evident from Soane's holdings of the 'Cabinet' that he was only really interested in acquiring the plates that related to architecture. However, since the precise distribution of plates of architectural interest varies between different sets and issues of the 'Cabinet', this strategy led to some unavoidable overlaps and omissions. Thus despite owning three other 'maison royales' recueils - an early issue (q.v.), and intermediate issue (q.v.) and a later separate issue of the Louvre and Tuileries plates (q.v.) - Soane ended up with duplicates of most of the plates in this volume and, somewhat disappointingly, only six out of a possible 78 'Cabinet' plates relating to Versailles.
