[2] leaves, [240] pl. ; 35.5 cm. (2°)

First edition: The Hague, 1703. Marot, son of the architect Jean Marot (1619–1679, q.v.), left France after the Edict of Nantes and was influential in spreading French design to the Netherlands and England. From 1687 he began to issue series of printed designs, usually in suites of six plates; the first collected edition was issued from 1703, though many copies were doubtless sold later, with the contents varying according to the purchaser's interest and the available stock. The total number of plates issued with the 1712 title-leaf may also have varied from copy to copy; BAL 2041 suggests a theoretical maximum of 302 plates based on the sum total of all suites found in recorded copies. The description above applies to the Soane Museum copy, which contains all but one of the thirty-nine suites in the copy described by BAL 2041, arranged in a different order and lacking the BAL copy's suite [31], 'Nouveaux Liure de Veüe et batiments en Perspectives ...'. Most of the suites are unnumbered, but ink numbers have been added to the Soane copy, which also has a second, identical letterpress title-leaf inserted after pl. [114], suggesting it was originally issued to be bound in two volumes. The title-leaf is printed in red and black, and has one line of the imprint cancelled with a pasted-on slip, covering the original erroneous text 'Ce van Chez L'Athuer'. See BAL, Early printed books, no. 2041.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting five of the plates (pl. 49-50, 53-54 of the untitled suite of designs for ceilings, BAL 2041 [6], and pl. 156 from 'Nouveaux Liure de Boïtes de Pendulles ...', BAL 2041 [14]). These were apparently present when the plates were numbered 1-240 in ink, in a hand possibly contemporary to Soane, but were missing by 1905 and possibly as early as 1892-94 on the evidence of curatorial inscriptions in pencil on the front pastedown by Papworth and Spiers. Plate 145 was misbound after numbering between pl. 149 and 150. The front pastedown also inscribed in ink 0/10/6 and in pencil, probably T. Boone's hand, Numerous designs/ =12s=. Rear pastedown inscribed in pencil with bookseller's cipher tgf.

Binding Later C18th (?) marbled paper boards (re-?)backed in red goatskin, vellum corners. Paper label lettered in ink 'Oeuvres./ D. Marot./ -1712-'. Traces of square paper label on upper board.

Reference Number 6520
