Title from engraved title-plate; complete copies additionally have an undated letterpress title reading Novvelle invention de lever l’eav plvs havt qve sa sovrce avec qvelqves machines movvantes par le moyen de l’eav, et vn discovrs de la condvit d’icelle. Par Jsaac de Cavs. Ingenievr, & architecte. Natif de Dieppe. A native of Dieppe, Isaac de Caus was a Huguenot garden designer and architect specializing in grottoes and water-works. He was in England by the early 1620s and there is evidence of his involvement with Inigo Jones in the 4th Earl of Bedford's Covent Garden development and at Wilton House, Wiltshire in the 1630s; the grotto at Wilton House was his most celebrated work. This is apparently the first edition of the present work, unsold sheets of which were reissued by Thomas Davies in 1657 with a new engraved title. ESTC r29187.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the letterpress title-leaf. The Soane copy, which evidently suffered some damage before its acquisition, has the leaves laid down on sheets of paper to strengthen the edges; the letterpress title was likely discarded at that time. The front free-endpaper is inscribed in pencil in the bookseller Thomas Boone's hand 26 Curious plates of / Mill Work & other Machinery and the price =2s:6d.
