THE MAGAZINE OF THE FINE ARTS ...
The Magazine of the Fine Arts; and monthly review of painting, sculpture, architecture, and engraving. [No. IV. August 1, 1821 - No. V. September 1, 1821]
London (Place), printed for John Warren; and G. & W.B. Whitaker. Moyes, printer,, 1821.
22.8 cm. (8°)

Title from printed wrappers. 'Price 3s.' This short-lived periodical, of which only six monthly numbers were issued between May and October 1821, was founded and edited by John Britton. See The autobiography of John Britton (London 1850), p. 181. A prospectus (q.v.) was sent to Soane by Britton in March 1821, but these are the only two numbers in his library. Amongst the contents are two letters from Gandy 'On The Philosophy Of Architecture' (pp. 289--293, 370--379), apparently prompted by the editors' report of Gandy's 'remonstrances on the unjustifiable attack made on me by the Guardian newspaper', which Gandy had reprinted together with the text of his own replies to the editors of the newspaper (q.v.). The two articles were written in response to three pseudonymous letters published in The Guardian on 20 and 27 May and 3 June 1821 criticizing Soane and his recent contributions to the Royal Academy Exhibition which were imaginatively rendered by Gandy. See Brian Lukacher, Joseph Gandy: an architectural visionary in Georgian England (London 2006), pp. 82-84; A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane, R.A. (London 1927), pp. 339--351.

Binding Original C19th printed yellow paper wrappers, the upper with the title and imprint as above within a decorative border.

Reference Number 6522

Additional Names Britton, John (1771--1857); Gandy, Joseph Michael (1771--1843)
