PERCIER,, Charles (1764--1838)
Engr. t.-pl., 72 etch. pl. ; 43.1 cm. (2º)
Issued in twelve cahiers, each containing 6 plates, around 1800--1801; the engraved title-plate was issued with the final part. Twenty-four leaves of letterpress text and a new title-leaf were added in 1812. This is generally referred to as the second edition, but the absence of any traced copies of the 1801 "first edition" with the letterpress make it more likely that the text was first issued in 1812, both separately for owners of the previously published plates, and together with a reprint or reissue of the 72 plates for customers who did not already own them. A further edition was published by Jules Didot aíné in 1827. The impact of this work on the development of the style empire, with its depictions of interior designs executed by Percier and Fontaine in Imperial palaces and private houses, was profound. See notes to BAL, Early printed books, no. 2491 (the 1827 ed.); Millard I, p. 390 (the 1812 ed.); Berlin Kat. 4055 (the 1801 ed.; see also 4056 and 4057).
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the title-plate and pl. 67--72, i.e. the final cahier.
Binding Later (?) C19th half maroon morocco-grained roan, blind roll-tooled edges, marbled-paper boards, thick-thin gilt-ruled and direct-lettered spine.
Reference Number 6524
Additional Names Fontaine, Pierre-François-Léonard (1762--1853)
