In Roma (Place), nella stamparia di Paolo Giunchi Komarek a spese di Venanzio Monaldini libraro,, 1768.
VIII, 492 p., etch. t.-pl., VI fold. etch. pl. ; 25.9 cm. (4º)

Anonymous; although the dedication is signed by the antiquarian Giovanni Antonio Monaldini, later editions name Francesco Milizia as the author. The title is taken from the etched title-plate. This was Milizia's first published work and also the first similar biographical dictionary of architects. A French translation of the biographical sections followed in 1771 (q.v.); an English translation did not appear until 1826 (q.v.). BAL, Early printed books, no. 2129.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Inscribed in pencil on the verso of the front free-endpaper, probably by the bookseller Thomas Boone, 2 Indexes & 6 folding Plates ye End/ 0.5s:0. With an engraved armorial bookplate pasted down on the same leaf, inscribed in pencil in the same hand Mathias, probably the satirist and Italian scholar Thomas James Mathias (1753/4--1835). Mathias moved to Naples for his health in 1817 and some of his books and manuscripts were sold by R.H. Evans on 6 April 1820. There is no record of Soane having attended that sale and he likely acquired this copy later from Boone.
