VILLAMENA, Francesco (1564--1624)
[Alcune opere d'architettura]
Alcvne opere d'architettvra di Iacomo Barotio da Vignola raccolte e poste in luce da Francesco Villamena ...
In Roma (Place), [Francesco Villamena],, 1617 [i.e. 1625 or after].
Engr. t.-pl., [17] engr. pl. (2 fold.) ; 42.5 cm. (2°)

The collation refers to the Soane copy only; copies of this work are usually found with up to 17 unnumbered plates. Villamena came into possession of the original copperplates of Vignola's Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura some time after their appearance bearing the imprint of Andrea Vaccario dated '1607', probably after the latter's death or retirement around 1615, and put together the present work of (originally) a title-plate and eleven plates which was probably available separately as well as together with Villamena's reprint of the Vignola plates (see BAL 3447/17). The present copy (printed on paper with a lamb and flag within double-lined circle similar to Heawood no. 2838) is bound, probably as issued, with a copy of Vignola bearing the undated imprint of Giovanni Battista de' Rossi (q.v.), who probably acquired the stock after Villamena's death in 1624 (see BAL 3447/21). BAL, Early printed books, no. 3481; Fowler Cat. 356.

Copy Notes Bound (2), as issued, with Vignola's Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura (q.v.). The Soane copy contains (in a different order) all eleven plates listed in BAL 3481, and the five additional plates including the Vignola 'Porta della fabbrica ... a Caprarola' in the state with the plate number 'XXXVII' erased (see BAL 3447, pp. 2215 and 2218), which is here bound facing the title-plate. Additionally there is a plate not listed in BAL, showing an uncaptioned elevation and section of a window with a panel beneath, the sill (but not the architrave) supported by a scrolling corbel.

Binding C17th vellum, spine lettered in ink 'Vignola', with a faded paper library label.

Reference Number 6539

Additional Names VIGNOLA, Giacomo Barozzi da (1507--1573)
