[Folio of mostly Italian caricatures by Ghezzi, Internari, etc.]
[68] leaves ; 36.7 x 56.1 cm. (obl. 2°)
An oblong folio album containing 60 caricature prints dated between 1738 and 1754. Twenty-one are after drawings by Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674--1755), arguably the first professional caricaturist; fourteen of these are etched by Matthias Oesterreich and dated Dresden between 1750 and 1752. Five further etchings by Oesterreich are after Giovanni Battista Internari and one is after Marco Benefial. There are also six small, closely cropped grotesques signed by Antonio Tempesta (1555--1630). Two plates are caricatures by W.H. Bunbury published by J. Bretherton, one dated 1772.
Copy Notes Ten of the plates (pencil numbers 36, 46--54) have the ownership stamp of Joshua Reynolds. Three unsigned plates of grotesques (pencil numbers 33--35) have an ownership stamp 'P.L', possibly that of Sir Peter Lely: see F. Lugt, Les marques de collections de dessins & d'estampes (1921; facsim. reprint San Francisco 1975), vol. I, p. 387 no. 2092.
