[6] p., [64] engr. pl. ; 53.8 cm. (2°)

This copy of Dumont's comprehensive study of St Peter's basilica in Rome represents an earlier state of the work later expanded for publication as tome I of Dumont's Recueil de plusieurs parties de l'architecture, 3 tomes, 1766--[70?] (q.v.). Further details of the complex publication history of the Détails ... de la basilique de St. Pierre are given in the record describing that later issue (q.v.), which was also available separately. The present issue is made of the plates later renumbered 1--5, 7--10, 12--43, 46--62, 65--70; they appear here in the same order, but numbered 31, 2--11, 8--9, 14--23, 'entre 23 et 24', 24--29, 31, 30, 32, 'entre 32 et 33', [10]--13, 37, 14--16, 41--42, 45, 17--21, 49--50, 22, 52, 23--24, 55, 25--26, 'entre 59 et 60', 27--30. A number of the plates are here in earlier states before the addition of shading. The present copy has none of the three approbation leaves found in later copies and is without the portrait or added part title.
