Part VI only of Grindlay's Scenery, costumes and architecture, chiefly on the western side of India, complete in two volumes originally published in six parts of six plates each between 1826 (with the imprint of R. Ackermann) and 1830. Title and imprint from printed wrapper. Includes the engraved title-plate to 'Vol. II', dated 1830 with lithographic vignette, on India paper in the present copy. The letterpress leaves are as follows: 'Part VI.' sub-title, 'Advertisement' leaf, two leaves of 'Contents' and [18] pp. of accompanying text. With a printed slip inserted at the front: 'Parts V. and VI. Are coloured By D. Smith, 29, Church-Street, Soho.' Tooley, 239.

Copy Notes The Soane copy additionally includes 8 unnumbered, uncoloured lithographic plates, not listed in Tooley, depicting sculptural figures from the cave temples at Ellora, signed 'Goblet delt.' and 'L. Haghe lithog.', with imprint lines reading 'Drawn by Captn. R.M. Grindlay, 1813, ... Lithographed for the Royal Asiatic Society by W. Day, 17, Gate Street.' Copies of the six plates from part V and one from part IV are preserved in Soane's drawings collection together with another set of four of the uncoloured lithographs depicting sculptured figures. (Drawer 57/12/1--14). These latter may be the impressions of the four alluded to in an ALs from William Etty dated only April 14, after Etty had written to Captain Grindlay respecting the Hinddoo / Antiquities ... publishing / by the Asiatic Society in /Lithography, and sent by Grindlay for Soane's acceptance. (Priv. Corr. I.E.7).

Binding C19th quarter maroon roan, original grey paper printed wrappers with title as above within decorative frame on upper cover, printed contents of the six parts on lower cover.
