A catalogue raisonée of the pictures now exhibiting at the British Institution. Printed with a sincere desire to assist the noble directors in turning the public attention to those particular pieces which they have kindly selected with the benevolent intention of affording the most favourable contrast to modern art, the encouragement, of which it is well known, is the sole aim and profession of the institution.

Satire. Attributed in the British Library catalogue to Robert Smirke. A review of the exhibition held at the British Institution. No publication-date is given; but the exhibition of Belgian and Dutch pictures on which the present text comments, containing 146 pictures, corresponds to that mounted by the British Institution in 1815. Includes 'Letter Of Dedication To The Incendiary Who Published The Two Extracts.' signed 'Stand pede in uno' (p. [3]). In the copies at the Royal Academy of Arts the text is preceded by a four-page notice, beginning, 'Declaration Issued In the Preface to the Catalogue, Of The British Institution, For April, 1811.'; a copy of this notice, which concludes with an announcement of the present 'Catalogue raisonnéee' to be transmitted 'in the course of a few days', is in Soane's archives (q.v.). A further spoof catalogue was published in two parts, under the title A catalogue raisonée [sic] of the pictures now exhibiting in Pall Mall, 1816 (q.v.).

Copy Notes Copy 1: Imperfect; wanting the title-page and dedication. On page 17 the word 'hierogliphics' corrected in ink with a y. Bound after a copy of A catalogue raisonée [sic] of the pictures now exhibiting in Pall Mall, 1816 (q.v., copy 2). Inscribed in pencil on rear pastedown very scarce / £1.-4-.
Copy 2: 24.7 cm. Imperfect; wanting all after page 36. Drop-head title on page [3] corrected 'raisonnée'. Bound after a copy of A catalogue raisonée [sic] of the pictures now exhibiting in Pall Mall, 1816 (copy 3).

Binding Copy 1: C19th calf, blind triple-ruled borders, blind-tooled spine, gilt-lettered 'Catalogue Raisonée'. Later numbered '25' in a series of sale catalogues.
Copy 2: C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, red morocco spine-label. Later numbered '27' in a series of sale catalogue volumes.
