Soane, Sir John (1753--1837). Designs for Public and Private Buildings - Criticism
[Description of the house and museum. 1832. French]
Description de la maison et du musée au côté nord de Lincoln's-Inn-Fields, habitation de Sir John Soane,...
Londres (Place), de l'imprimerie de Moyes,, 1832.
xviii, [2], 27, [1] p., [18] pl. (4 etch., 12 litho.; numbered I--XVI, bis pl. XIV*, XV*), etch. frontis. : [2] wd-engr. illus. ; 30.2 cm. (4°)

Not published. Plate 13 misnumbered 14. 58 copies of Soane's 1832 Description in French were printed by James Moyes on 30 October 1832. (Archives 7/17/4). Copies 1--8 are bound with French translation first, before the English text (q.v.), and after Plans, élévations, et vues en perspective, du domaine de Pitzhanger, ... 1833 in French (q.v.) and English (q.v.); see the separate catalogue entry for the English text for details of the relationship of the 1832 Description to the original 'edition' of 1830 (q.v.). Although both the French and English texts contain references to the plates, those in copies 1--8 are bound only with the French translation. The wood-engravings pasted down on the half-title and the etched plate of the Sarcophagus Room used as a frontispiece to the French text appeared earlier in Britton's Union (q.v.). All the copies at the Soane have as a frontispiece to the English text Sir Francis Chantrey's portrait bust of Soane which was engraved on steel by Charles Turner on 24 February 1831; and printed in 50 copies on 11 November 1831 (Archives 7/16/4). Copy 9 is bound with the English text and plates first and does not include the plate of the Sarcophagus Room or the descriptions of Pitzhanger. Edwin Hutchinson billed Soane for binding 5 copies of the French translation separately in November 1832 (Archives 7/17/19); these were evidently for presentation and have not been traced. The manuscript of the French translation, corrected by Soane, is preserved in the Museum (Soane Case 67). The translator, Martin Saurin, ancien avocat, LL. D. de l'Académie d'Aix et de l'Université de France, is credited on the half-title. Preparatory drawings and other material related to the Description of 1830, 1832 and 1835/36 can be found in SM Vol. 82; Vol. 85A; Drawer 60 Set 2; the Hobhouse Portfolio; and the British Library volume which is the subject of an article by Bianca De Divitiis, 'A newly discovered volume from the office of Sir John Soane', Burlington Magazine, CXIV, March 2003, pp. 180--197.
