SOANE, Sir John (1754--1837)
[Description of the house and museum. 1835/6. French]
xiv, 103, [1] p., etch. frontis. port., XXXVIII pl. (17 litho., 14 engr., 7 zinco.) : [11] illus. (5 wd-engr., 5 etch., 1 engr.) ; 36.3 cm. (2°)

A total of 100 copies of the French translation of the third edition of Soane's description of his house and collections were printed: 50 were bound separately; 25 were bound first with the English text second; 25 were bound second after the English text (see Soane Case 79, insertion). All copies in the Soane Museum (including those bound after the English text) have Soane's autograph signature in ink on the title-page. The dedication to 'Son Altesse Royale Auguste-Frédéric, Duc De Sussex' is dated 10 September 1835. This is the source of the 1835 date of publication given by most libraries; however, archival sources clearly indicate that the book was in fact published in 1836. The French translation omits the text of the 1833 Act at the end of the English edition (pp. 101--109), after the 'Conclusion', which here is mistakenly dated 'le 10 Décembre, 1833' as opposed to '10 December 1835' in English. The separate catalogue entry for the English text (q.v.) gives further details of the plates and the relation of this work to the 1832 Description (the second in English and the first to be translated into French).

Copy Notes Soane copies 1--11 are French only; copies 12--16 are bound with the letterpress of the English text (q.v., copies 5--9) with the plates in the English version only.
