A collection of 152 portraits of eminent men and women, pasted down on the rectos of two large quarto volumes in the early 20th century by Walter L. Spiers (curator, 1904--1917). The portraits are arranged in alphabetical order and the leaves are numbered 1--152 in ink top right. The bulk of the series is made up of 115 portraits from The European Magazine (q.v.), bearing dates between 1807 and 1822, including some proof plates. A further six portraits are by Hopwood after sketches by Rowlandson and bear the imprint line of J. Stratford dated 1809. A small number of portraits date to the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. The portrait of John Tayler, late editor of The Sun is a post-Soane addition dated 1840.

Copy Notes Some of the plates are engraved within the platemarks and others were previously stab-stitched. Some bear earlier numbers in pencil, bottom right. The portrait of 'Napoléon Premier, Empereur et Roi' by P. Augrand after Lafitte, with the imprint of the Paris printseller Chaise (pl. 11), is accompanied by a leaf (watermarked 1822) laid down on the facing page, inscribed in ink To / John Soane Esq / with J Britton's Compl[imen]ts / presented to J B. by Lafitte the / draftsman, i.e. the engraver and painter Louis Lafitte (1770--1828). Plate 58 is an India-paper proof lithograph of Thomas Faulkner, a bookseller and stationer with a shop near the Chelsea Hospital, captioned and signed 'J. Holmes ad virum del[ineavi]t', and accompanied by a leaf laid down on the facing page, inscribed in ink To,/ Sir John Soane,/ Presented/ With Sentiments of profound Respect/ Thos. Faulkner/ July 14. 1834. Plate 62, an India-paper proof engraved portrait of William Garshore, M.P. on the occasion of his death in April 1806, is inscribed at the foot in ink, in Soane's hand, Present from D:Garthshore Oct 17. 1806.
