COLLECTION DES PRINCIPAUX MONUMENS ...
Collection des principaux monumens et vues de Paris.
Paris (Place), chez Vallardi,, [c. 1820?].
Engr. t.-pl., 82 engr. pl. ; (8º)

Suggested date of publication from British Library catalogue. The plate imprint lines also name Colnaghi of London. The plates bear two sets of numbering, being numbered top right in two sequences as Nos. 1--70 (views of Paris) and 1--12 (views of the environs), and centrally under the caption and imprint line 1--82, with the plates arranged in a different order but with the views of Paris (numbered 1--70) still preceding those of the environs (numbered 71--82). The Bibliothèque Nationale catalogue records this collection as two separate suites: one of 70 plates with the title reading as above, and a second suite of 12 plates titled Collection des principaux monumens et vues des environs de Paris, suggesting that at one point the second sequence may have been available separately, but in the absence of a second title-plate, it is not possible to say whether the Soane set was issued as one or two suites.

Copy Notes The plates of the suite are pasted down in the order of the numbering top right, on the versos of a large quarto scrapbook facing the plates of an earlier suite of circular aquatint views after Testard and Sergent-Marceau published by 'les Campions freres et fils' around 1790 as Vues pittoresques des principaux édifices de Paris (q.v.); these are followed by a second suite of circular aquatint views by Janinet after Durand apparently published under the same title by Esnauts et Rapilly (q.v.). Additionally inserted in the sequence between plates no. 1 and 2 of the 'Environs' sequence is a plate of the 'Montagnes Françaises Jardin Beaujon'. This plate has no number at the foot of the imprint line, and the number top right has been rubbed out and is illegible. There is also a duplicate of the plate of 'Palais Bourbon Chambres des Députés' (numbered no. 43; 11) inserted at the end of the 'Environs' sequence.

Binding C18th quarter sheep, mottled Kleisterpapier boards, gilt-tooled spine, red leather spine-label lettered in gilt 'Recueil D'Estampes'. 28.6 cm.

Reference Number 6630
