Date from additional engraved title-plate 'Palais Massimi A Rome. Dessiné et Publié Par F.T. Suys et L.P. Haudebourt. Paris MDCCCXVIII.', with a portrait of Baldassarre Peruzzi signed 'Dien et Theirry sculp.'. Originally published in parts starting in 1818, the work must have been completed by September 1819, when copy 1 was purchased for Soane in Paris. The 43 plates comprise three plans and outline-etched elevations, sections and details. BAL, Early printed books, no. 3215.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Bought by E. Conduitt from J. Salmon, marchand d'estampes, 7 Boulevard Montmartre for 50 francs on 9 September 1819. (Priv. Corr. XIV.B.4.2). Soane visited Paris with William Pilkington, Mr and Mrs Conduitt and Henry Parke from 21 August to 23 September 1819. Bookseller's(?) inscription in pencil on front free-endpaper; rear pastedown inscribed in ink 82. Copy 2: 59.2 cm. Bought from Priestley and Weale on 26 May 1824 for £3 13s. 6d. (Spiers Box). With the printed red paper ticket of 'Priestley & Weale's Establishment of Works on the Fine Arts, No.5, High Street, Bloomsbury, London' attached to the front pastedown.

Binding Copy 1: C19th half grained hairsheep, red paste-paper boards, gilt-ruled and gilt-lettered spine. Copy 2: C19th full dark green paste-paper, red leather spine-label.
