'Madame B***' is identified with Octavie Belot, later Octavie Durey de Meinières, by J.M. Querard, Les supercheries litteraires, vol. 1, p. 434. The imprint is false; printed on the continent, probably in Paris. The Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume's The history of England, under the house of Tudor was first published in London in 1759, and later incorporated with the histories of the Plantagenets (first published in late 1761 with an imprint date of 1762) and the Stuarts (first published 1754--1757) into Hume's six-volume History of England, from the invasion of Julius Cæsar to the revolution in 1688, 1762. Madame Belot's translation of the history of the Tudors was first published in 1763, following the Abbé Prévost's translation of The history of England, under the house of Stuart in 1760. The present edition has the volumes numbered to follow the first two volumes of Hume's History of England, translated by Madame Belot as Histoire de la maison de Plantagenet, sur le trône d'Angleterre, 1765 (q.v.); the signature lines state 'Tome I (II).'. Not in ESTC.
