The imprint is false; printed on the continent, probably in Paris. A translation of the Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume's The history of Great Britain, under the house of Stuart, 1754--1757, by the Abbé Prévost, first published with a false London imprint as Histoire de la maison de Stuart, sur le trône d'Angleterre, 1760, in three volumes. Hume added a history of the Tudors in 1759 and of the Plantagenets in late 1761 (with an imprint date of 1762) and the three works were subsequently issued as the six-volume History of England, from the invasion of Julius Cæsar to the revolution in 1688, 1762. The present edition has the volumes numbered to follow the first four volumes of Hume's History of England, translated by Octavie Belot (later Octavie Durey de Meinières) as Histoire de la maison de Plantagenet, sur le trône d'Angleterre, 1765 (q.v.) and Histoire de la maison de Tudor, sur le trône d'Angleterre, 1763 (1768 ed., q.v.); the signature lines state 'Tome I (II).'. This edition may form part of a six-volume quarto edition recorded as ESTC t230931. Stendhal in his Vie de Henri Brulard attests how the reading of the translation of Hume's account of the trial and death of Charles I gave succour to the 'ultras' in his father's house in Grenoble at the time of the tribulations and execution of Louis XVI.
