The second volume in an annual publication consisting of biographies of famous Englishmen, and a few women, of the day, which commenced publication with a volume for 1798 which had reached its third edition in 1801 (q.v.). The biographies are largely attributed to Alexander Stephens. The subjects of the present volume include Sir Francis Bourgeois, later one of the founders of Dulwich Picture Gallery. 'Price Nine Shillings, in Boards' at foot of title-page. With an advertisement announcing the publication of 'Another or third volume of this work ... in October, 1800' on the verso of the title-page, a further publisher's advertisement at the foot of p. 580, and a final leaf of errata. ESTC t170081.

Copy Notes Bound as vol. II in a set with the volumes for 1798--9 (q.v.), 1800--1801 (q.v.), and 1801--1802 (q.v.); the volume for 1802--1803 was evidently bound separately to match, as vol. V (q.v.).
