Compiled by Nicholas Carlisle, secretary, who signs the dedication. Vetusta Monumenta was the title of a series of engravings issued by the Society of Antiquaries, beginning shortly after the Society was formally established in 1718, with the intention of disseminating images of objects for discussion and comparison by members, and of recording antiquities under threat. These were later collected in volumes, the first three dated 1747, 1789, and 1796, containing plates published between 1718 and 1747, 1748 and 1789, and 1790 and 1796 respectively. See Greg Harris, Making history: antiquaries in Britain 1707--2007 (London: Royal Academy, 2007), pp. 14-15. The Society's periodical Archaeologia, collecting papers presented at meetings, began publication in 1770 (q.v.). Soane was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1795.
