A presentation album of proof printings of Charles Turner's mezzotint portrait of Soane after Sir Thomas Lawrence's large portrait of the architect completed in 1829, with caption title as above; statement of responsibility and imprint from plate publication line dated 'Jany. 18 1830'; Turner was paid £164 15s. for engraving, paper and printing on 13 February 1830. (Spiers Box). The plates in this volume (first, second, and third proofs before letters, a cropped copy, and a proof after letters) are laid down in an album interleaved with tissue paper guards. A framed copy hangs on the north wall of the South Drawing Room at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields. A similar album was presented two years later in connection with Turner's engraving after Francis Chantrey's bust of Soane (q.v.).

Copy Notes The first leaf bears a MS. dedication to Soane from the engraver, dated 16 February 1830: 'Dear Sir / Allow me to enclose a few specimens, / shewing the proof of the Plate from your portrait, which I / have had the pleasure to engrave after that admirable picture / painted by my late friend & Patron Sir Thomas Lawrence. This was the last print which I submitted to the judgment / of that great Artist, on Saturday January 2d: 1830, when / he observed "I thank you for the trouble you have taken, / pray make the sky & that part under lighter, by so doing / you will get more power in your print, which will greatly assist(?) / the effect, ...'. Lawrence's death occurred before Turner was able to show him the completed plate. Printed red paper ticket of 'R. Ackermann Junr. 191 Regent Street.' on front pastedown.

Binding C19th half maroon roan, gilt-ruled and blind-tooled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine.
