BRAHAM, John (1774--1856)
[Packet of John Braham song texts]
[18--].

A collection of cuttings of the words only (no printed music) of songs performed by the singer John Braham, the most celebrated tenor of his day. The composers include Handel and Mozart. John Braham's long-standing relationship with the soprano Anna Selina [Nancy] Storace came to an acrimonious end in 1815 when Braham had an affair with a Mrs Wright, whose husband brought an action against the tenor for criminal conversation. Soane, a personal friend of Storace since he met the English-born singer in Italy during his grand tour, acted as intermediary between Braham and Storace in arranging the division of their property. See A.T. Bolton (ed.), The portrait of Sir John Soane, R.A. (London 1927), p. 128.

Copy Notes Some songs printed on cuttings from two pages of the original work are pinned together.

Binding Loosely inserted in a contemporary blue paper envelope stitched with orange thread.

Reference Number 6776
