ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS, London
[A volume of press cuttings and MS. reports of Royal Academy exhibitions 1777--1821]
[85 leaves] ; 30.8 cm. (4º)

An album containing a collection of press cuttings and some MS. reports dated between 1777 and 1821, arranged in chronological order with dates and sources usually recorded in MS. Pasted down on a preliminary leaf is the seating plan for the Royal Academy exhibition dinner, 3 May 1817. The cuttings for the 1802 exhibition include a seating plan and a diagram of a picture hang. The volume corresponds to lot 815 on the third day of Sotheby and Son's sale of Sir Thomas Lawrence's library in June 1830 (q.v.), and was probably assembled by Joseph Farington.

Copy Notes Purchased on Soane's behalf by John Britton at the Lawrence sale, lot 815 for £6 17s. 6d. on 28 June 1830. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.4). Tipped in to precede the 1817 seating plan are four pages of procedural notes in Lawrence's hand; loosely inserted at leaf [84] is a printed invitation to a meeting of the Royal Academician's Club at the Freemason's Tavern on the 4th Feby 1818, with the imprint of 'Spragg, Prnter'.

Binding C19th half russia calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine with gilt-lettered spine-title 'Report Of Royal Academy Exhibitions From 1777'. The end-leaves are watermarked 'H SMITH / 1810'.

Reference Number 6831
