A translation by John Obadiah Justamond of Raynal's Histoire philosophique et politique des établissemens et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes first published London, 1776. Raynal's history of the European colonies in the East and West Indies, denouncing the cruelties and abuses imposed on native peoples, was first published anonymously in Amsterdam in 1770, and later expanded and much reprinted between 1772 and 1779; some of the more radical passages are attributed to the philosophe and encyclopaedist Denis Diderot. According to Sabin, this is the variant edition having 91 fewer pages and two fewer maps than another 'third edition' published 1777. The frontispiece portrait of Raynal in vol. I is engraved by Alexander Bannerman. The engraved maps dated 1776 are by Thomas Kitchen. ESTC t94803; Sabin 68088; Goldsmiths' 11579.
