Imprint on verso of title-pages: Edinburgh: printed by J. & C. Muirhead. Whiston's translation of the works of Josephus was first published in 1737 (q.v.). One of the treasures of Soane's library is a fifteenth-century illuminated MS. of Josephus's History of the Jews, previously in the Royal Library of King Edward IV (MS 1, vol. 135; see Eric G. Millar, 'Les manuscrits à peintures des bibliothèques de Londres', Paris, from Bulletin de la Société Française de Reproductions de Manuscrits à Peintures, 1914--1920, pp. 9--14), at Lord Berwick's Attingham sale in August 1827 for £147.

Binding C19th polished calf, gilt double-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine compartments, dark blue and green morocco spine-labels.
