Title and imprint from engraved title-plates in all volumes. Volumes I--VIII (1834) contain David Hume's History of England, first published 1754--62; volumes IX--XIII (1834--35) contain Tobias Smollett's History of England, first published 1755--57 and revised in 1758; volumes XIV--XXI (1835--36) are a continuation by Hughes to 1835. Each volume has an engraved frontispiece and a title-plate vignette by A.W. Warren. Publisher's advertisements at the front of several of the volumes.
Copy Notes Unopened. Volume I with 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements four the present work and others bound before the title (q.v.), as issued; vol. XIV with a prospectus for a new edition of the works of Pope (q.v.); vol. XV with sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements (q.v.).
Binding Original publisher's C19th cased maroon moiré binder's cloth, spine-title 'History Of England With Illustrations ...' stamped in gilt within decorative cartouche.
