Preface dated at end: 'June 11, 1694.'; postscript dated at end (p. xxxvii): 'April 30. 1697'. First published in 1694, in response to William Temple's Essay on ancient and modern learning (1690) and the works of Charles Perrault in the dispute between the ancients and the moderns; a second part was published in 1698. Bentley's Dissertation, called for on the title-page, is separately paginated and signed *A--*I8 *K4(-4), and has its own title-page and imprint as for title-page of main work; it appears in this edition for the first time. It was also issued with the second part and may have been issued separately (see Wing B1928, EST r14052). The final leaf of the Reflections (2E4) is blank. ESTC r37264; Wing (1996), W3659.
