First published in 1780. The final leaf in vol. II contains 'Proposals For Printing By Subscription Dramatic Miscellanies, ...', dated February 1, 1781. Davies had turned from a failed bookselling business to the stage, and retired from acting in 1762 to establish a bookshop at 8 Russell Street, Covent Garden, where James Boswell first met Samuel Johnson the following year. His Dramatic miscellanies: consisting of critical observations on several plays of Shakspeare were eventually published in three volumes, 1783--84 (new ed. 1785, q.v.). He also turned to writing chiefly biographical material, most importantly the present work in which he was assisted by Garrick's friend and mentor Samuel Johnson. ESTC t136456.
