SOCIETY FOR BETTERING THE CONDITION OF THE POOR IN IRELAND
Society for Bettering the Condition of the Poor in Ireland, by means of employment.
London (Place), printed by E. Beckett,, 1822.
4, 14, [2] p. ; 17.8 cm.

1822 was a year of famine in Ireland and there were efforts to raise subscriptions through benefit concerts in Dublin and London as well as the raising of contributions by means of such committees and their supporters. This appears to be a preliminary draft for a brochure being heavily annotated with MSS. additions to the names of the Acting Committee and Subscribers. The words 'By means of employment' are crossed through on the title-page and the name given above the list of the Acting Committee is Irish Society, for the Employment of the Poor in Ireland where likewise the words 'for the Employment of the Poor in Ireland' are struck through. Further additional names are set out on the verso of the title-page under the formal designations of 'Patrons' and 'Vice Presidents'. The [Acting] Chairman was the Earl of Blessington and the Secretary J.C. Michell. Soane's name appears in the printed list of subscribers (at £5:5:0).

Copy Notes Tipped inside the back cover of Blessington's Observations ... on the state of Ireland, 1822 (q.v.). With an ALs in ink attached to the title-page dated July 1, 1822, signed by Blessington and headed My dear Sir, subscribed at the foot to J.
