MONTAGU, Ralph Montagu, Duke of (1638?--1709)
Two letters from Mr. Mountagu to the Ld Treasurer; one of the 11th, the other of the 18th of Jan. 1677/8 which were read in the House of Commons. Together with the Lord Treasurer's speech in the House of Peers, upon an impeachment of high treason, &c. brought up against his Lordship by the House of Commons, Decem. 23. 1678.

In another edition, dated the same year, line 4 reads 'Mr. Montagu'. Thomas Osborne, Earl of Danby, later 1st Duke of Leeds, was the Lord Treasurer, 1673--78. Danby earned the personal enmity of Ralph Montagu by blocking his ambition to become Secretary of State and was impeached on 23 December 1678 for his role in secret negotiations with France (q.v.). Copy Notes Bound (8) in a collection of 14 English political tracts relating to parliament with imprint dates between 1673 and 1682, inscribed in ink on the front pastedown Lee Warner.

Binding C17th sheep, blind-tooled borders and centre lozenge, later paper spine-label lettered in ink 'Parliament 1676' and octagonal paper library shelf-label lettered '102'.
