Price, Richard (1723--1791). Observations on the nature of civil liberty. Additions
Two tracts on civil liberty, the war with America, and the debts and finances of the kingdom: with a general introduction and supplement. By Richard Price, D.D. F.R.S.
London (Place), printed for T. Cadell,, 1778.
[4], xxvi; [6], 112; xxi, [3], 180, 36 p., [1] fold. letterpress table ; 20.9 cm. (8º)

Richard Price was a close friend of Benjamin Franklin and one of the British advocates of American independence. His pamphlet Observations on the nature of civil liberty, and the war with America was first published in February 1776 and had gone through eleven editions by May of that year; it was continued in the following year by his Additional observations ... (q.v.). The present volume gathers the two works following a collective title-page, as follows: a 'General Introduction' (xxvi pp.); the Observations, eighth edition with corrections and additions, with title-page dated 1778 ([6], 112 pp.); the Additional observations, third edition with additions, with title-page dated 1777 (xxi, [3], 180 p.); and a 'Supplement' (36 pp.; signatures: D--E8 F2) with a folded letterpress table. The general introduction and supplement were apparently available separately (see ESTC t12977). Page [vi] of the Additional observations contains publisher's advertisements for other works by Price, p. [xxii] contains errata and is followed by a blank leaf [sig. a4], and pp. 177--180 contain a 'Postscript ... published only in a few of the last Editions of the Observations ...'. ESTC records two such collected editions in 1778, ESTC t12976 and ESTC n46916, however neither precisely matches the Soane copy as described here.

Copy Notes The Soane copy, in a later binding, lacks the initial advertisement leaf recorded in both editions described in ESTC.

Binding C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt triple-ruled spine, black morocco spine-label. Bound by Hood & McCullock for 3s., 2 May 1826. (Archives 16/12/38).
