Adam Smith's wide-ranging enquiry, the foundation text of modern political economics and unrivalled by his contemporaries for scope and depth, was first published in March 1776 in two volumes quarto, and is still one of the few acknowledged classics in the field. With an index and a leaf of advertisements for two other works by Smith at the end of vol. III. ESTC t95381; Goldsmiths' 16558.

Binding Late C18th marbled calf, gilt double-ruled borders with gilt roll-tooled inner frames and small gilt corner ornaments, gilt-ruled spine with small gilt centre-pieces, marbled edges to match the endpapers.
