COLERIDGE, Henry Nelson (1798--1843)
Six months in the West Indies, in 1825. By Henry Nelson Coleridge, ... Third edition, with additions.
London: John Murray, 1832.
[6], 311, [1] p., [1] fold. map frontis. ; 15.3 cm. (8º)

Forms no. XXXVI of Murray's (later Tegg's) 'Family Library'. Originally published anonymously in 1826. The author was the nephew, son-in-law and literary executor of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, first Seceretary of the new King's College, London. In 1825 he accompanied his uncle, William Hart Coleridge, the Bishop of Barbados, to the West Indies, apparently an unsuccessful attempt by the family to break off his engagement with his cousin Sara Coleridge (the poet's daughter). In this lively and anecdotal work account he covers all of the West Indies; Madeira; Grenada; St. Vincent; St. Lucia; Trinidad; Martinique; Montserrat; Barbados; Dominica; St. Christopher's; Anguilla; Antigua; and deals also with the state of the planters and their slaves. Sabin 14318.
