Forms nos. XXII, XXXIV , XXXVI of Murray's (later Tegg's) 'Family Library'. Volume I printed in Edinburgh by Ballantyne, vol. II in London by A. & R. Spottiswoode and vol. III in London by W. Clowes. With a final leaf of publisher's advertisements at end of vol. II. Plates engraved on steel by W.H. Lizars. Contains biographies of Alexander III, Michael Scott, Sir William Wallace, Robert Bruce, John Barbour, Andrew Wynton, John De Fordun, James I, Robert Henryson, William Dunbar, Gavin Douglas, and Sir David Lindsay. A final chapter of 'Antiquarian Illustrations' in vol. III has a divisional title-leaf.

Copy Notes Volume I with a copy of Murray's Family Library Advertiser, May 1831 (q.v.) bound at the front as issued. Volumes II--III both with bookseller's label on front pastedown reading 'Sold by T. & W. Boone'. Volume III with a 16-pp. List of the volumes of the Family Library published since its commencement ..., 1833 (q.v.) tipped onto the front free-endpaper. A bill from T. & W. Boone records Soane's purchase of volumes 15 to 18 and 20 to 22 of the 'Family Library' for £1 11s. 6d. on 17 June 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.15).

Binding Publisher's grey cloth with title printed on upper cover: 'The Family Library. No. ... Lives of Scottish Worthies ... Price Five Shillings'; and list of titles on lower cover; spine with printed series title 'Lives of Scottish Worthies ... Family Library No. ...'. The spine is damaged showing printer's waste paper spine lining with heading 'November.'
