Forms nos. XV and XLVIII--L of Murray's (later Tegg's) 'Family Library' series. The work was expanded into four volumes following the publication of volume I. The author's original plan was extended to 'embraces the annals of India from the earliest times' to the Marhatta War (see 'Advertisement' to vol. I). Volume I has a final leaf of advertisements. Volume III has a half-title: British India. The engraved frontispiece portrait to vol. I is by E. Finden after Gainsborough; that to vol. II is by J.C. Edwards; that to vol. III is by W.C. Edwards; the portrait bust to vol. IV is after Joseph Nollekens. Issued with tissue guards to the frontispieces. The folded map tipped in before the advertisements at the end of vol. I is drawn and engraved by J. & C. Walker.

Copy Notes Volume I with a copy of Murray's Family Library Advertiser, August 1830 (q.v.) bound at the front, with a publisher's announcement on a blue printed slip pasted on (and reading: 'Nearly ready, Family Library. - No. XVI. ... In a few days, ... Family Dramatists. - No. II. ...'). Volume IV has publisher's slip tipped in at the front. Volumes III and IV, mostly unopened, have labels of T. & W. Boone (bookseller) on front pastedown. A bill from T. & W. Boone records Soane's purchase of volumes 15 to 18 and 20 to 22 of the 'Family Library' for £1 11s. 6d. on 17 June 1831. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.15).

Binding Publisher's brown cloth with title printed on upper cover: 'The Family Library. No. ... Three volumes .... Price Five Shillings'; and list of the titles in the series on lower cover; spine with printed series title: 'History of British India. Three Vols. 15s. ... Family Library. No. ...'.
