Copies of original letters from the army of General Bonaparte in Egypt, intercepted by the fleet under the command of Admiral Lord Nelson. With an English translation.

The letters are given in the original, each followed by the English translation; the editor and translator are anonymous. Two further installments of additional intercepted letters were published, in 1799 (q.v.) and 1800 (q.v.), each going through several editions. The letters were published with the intention 'to undeceive Europe, (still trembling at the tal), by proving from their own statements, that what began in wickedness and fraud, was likely to terminate in wretchedness and despair' (Introduction, p. [i]). The map shows the Nile delta between Alexandria, Cairo, and Suez. With two final leaves of publisher's advertisements. ESTC t121979.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the map, and without the final advertisement leaves. Bound (1) with the second part in the fifth edition, and the third part in the fourth edition. Bought per John Williams at R.H. Evans's sale of John Nash's library, 15--20 July, 1835 (q.v.) in lot 39 for 7s. with E. Gifford, Memoirs of the life and campaigns of Napoleon Buonaparte, 1814 (q.v.), and Lewis Goldsmith, The secret history of the cabinet of Bonaparte, 1810 (q.v.). Inscribed in ink on first pastedown, partly over Soane's die-sinker bookplate Bought at Mr Nash's / sale by J. Williams / Bookseller for me / 1st day's sale July 1835 / J.S-. Book label of Sir G.
