First edition also 1799; the first part was published in 1798 (q.v.), and a third with further additional letters in 1800 (q.v.), all three installments going through numerous editions. Includes one letter in Greek. The editor and translator are anonymous. The plate shows facsimiles of the writing of Napoleon, Nelson, and Berthier, and Napoleon's seal. With 4 final pages of publisher's advertisements. ESTC n44594.
Copy Notes Without the two final leaves of advertisements. Bound (2) with the first part in the first edition, and the third part in the fourth edition. The volume was bought per John Williams at R.H. Evans's sale of John Nash's library, 15--20 July, 1835 (q.v.) in lot 39 for 7s. with E. Gifford, Memoirs of the life and campaigns of Napoleon Buonaparte, 1814 (q.v.), and Lewis Goldsmith, The secret history of the cabinet of Bonaparte, 1810 (q.v.). (Spiers Box, Purchases through personal friends; Curatorial Papers/Bailey/Outsize Box 16). Inscribed in ink on first pastedown, partly over Soane's die-sinker bookplate Bought at Mr Nash's / sale by J. Williams / Bookseller for me / 1st day's sale July 1835 / J.S-. Book label of Sir G. Thomas of Dale-Park, Sussex on the front pastedown.
