Verso of title-page: Printed by Cox and Baylis. Described in the Introduction, dated Knightsbridge, Dec. 14, 1818, as 'the joint production of two Gentlemen in France, the one an Englishman, the other a Frenchman.' Pages [vii]--[viii] (sig. [a4]?) contain a list of 'Works On Education. Printed for Henry Colburn, Conduit Street.' A second edition appeared in the same year (q.v.).
Copy Notes Probably the copy bought on 28 May 1819 for 4s. 6d. through the agency of Soane's footman James[?] (SNB), presumably in preparation for Soane's last journey to Paris in August of that year. Inscribed in ink in Soane's hand on front free-endpaper: Prep:/ From - with - of: -- de/ To - for, - in: --- à. A folded scrap of paper is inserted as a bookmark at pp. 44-5 (phrases for 'Dinner' and 'Reading'). Calculations in pencil on rear free-endpaper.
Binding Bound uniform with the copy of the second edition in contemporary C19th half black morocco, gilt-ruled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, direct-lettered with title.
