Volume I only of an anonymous French translation of Cervantes's Novelas ejemplares in two volumes. The engraved frontispiece (before letters) and the full-page engravings facing the first page of each novella are included in the pagination and register. Title-page printed in red and black. The final pages contain a 'Catalogue De Livres qui se trouvent chez Claude Jordan'. Contents: L'illustre Fregonne. -- Histoire de Ruis Dias. -- L'amant liberal. -- L'Egyptienne. -- La force du sang.
Copy Notes Lacking final leaf of advertisements (T12, included in above collation). Bought as a set with a copy of vol. II of the third edition, 1720 (q.v.). Price 5/ and library shelfmark N64 inscribed on front pastedown. Former ownership inscription concealed by Soane bookplate on front pastedown, possibly B[illegible]/ L[ibrary?]/ M[ilsom?] Street/ Bath. Engraved bookplate with cockatrice and motto reading 'Decrevi' laid down on verso of first front free-endpaper. Some mathematical figures in ink on final pastedown. Former library shelf mark in ink on spine.
Binding Full C18th parchment, blind double-rule borders, red morocco spine-label. Bound uniformly with a copy of vol. II, third edition, 1720 (q.v.).
