Engleheart and J.H. Watt after J.M.W. Turner, T. Stothard, J. Flaxman, Il Parmigianino and J. Callot. All the steel-engraved vignettes in the Soane copy are proof impressions. Like Soane, Rogers was a collector of antiquities and art, which he displayed in his house at St. James's Street, Westminster; one poem in this volume, 'An Epistle to a Friend', celebrates connoisseurship; his best-known poem was 'The Pleasures of Memory', which was praised by Lord Byron. A draft of Soane's letter of acknowledgement dated 14 January 1834 for the present of your delightful / Poems, so beautifully illustrated by / those eminent Artists Stothard & / Turner survives in Soane's archive; Soane goes on to mention the great / satisfaction I feel in seeing such a / rare union of talent as the volume / exhibits, tho I must add I am one / of those who consider that the Poems / little needed such embellishment / to attract general attention and / admiration. (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.127). The copy of Rogers' Italy (q.v.) may have been presented on the same occasion.
