Written in French and first published in 1727, the English translation of this enormously successful work also first appeared in 1727. The second volume of this second London edition is dated 1728. Ramsay, a Scotsman, who lived most of his life in France, was an important figure in Freemasonry; at one time he was Grand Chancellor of the Paris Grand Lodge. Soane was appointed Grand Superintendent of Works to the United Fraternity of Freemasons in 1813, and also owned the 1795 translation (q.v.) of the improved new edition of this work. 'A Discourse ...' has separate pagination and register, and is preceded by 'A Letter From Mr. Freret ... To The Author, Concerning The Chronology Of His Work' in parallel French and English, with its own pagination and register. ESTC t121199.
