Translation of Hawkesworth's Account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His present Majesty, 1773, by J.B.A. Suard. These volumes report the naval journeys of John Byron, Philipp Carteret, and Samuel Wallis who all sailed to the Southern hemisphere between 1764 and 1768. The main focus of the work is on James Cook's first circumnavigation of the world, 1768-1771; Hawkesworth was employed to write the official account, which was a literary success but much criticised for its editorial inaccuracies. This 8o edition was issued the same year as the first French 4º edition in 4 vols. With publisher's advertisements at the end of Vol. VIII.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the atlas volume. Pencil inscription on vol. I free end-paper: 1,15-. This is evidently the set of '[Voyages de] Cook. 8 Vol.' bought from John Cumming for £1 15s. on 19 May 1802. (Spiers Box. Miscellaneous booksellers). Shelfmark inscribed in ink on half-title verso: 122g.a [?].
Binding C18th 'catspaw' calf, triple gilt-ruled, gold-tooled spine, monochrome marbled endpapers, gilt edges, red morocco spine-labels reading 'Voyages / De / Byron' and 'Tom I (-VIII)'.
