William Coxe was an English historian whose father was physician to the king's household. These travels were undertaken at a time when Coxe was travelling tutor to the son of the Earl of Pembroke. The significant maps of Poland, Russia, Moscow, St. Petersburg, etc, are by 'Thomas Kitchen' [i.e. Kitchin]. In addition to the maps, there is much on the history of these regions, their present administration and government, commerce and finance, military organization, descriptions of the inhabitants, from the nobility and clergy to the burghers and peasants, including the Jews of Poland, the mines, education, and much else. Also included is some material on Finland and Lithuania. Coxe was present during the partition of Poland which is described in detail. First published in 1784. ESTC t134280.
