Coxe had been tutor to the Duke of Marlborough's eldest son, and then travelling tutor to the son of the Earl of Pembroke whom he accompanied on these travels through Switzerland. He first published these travels in one volume in 1779 under the title Sketches of the natural, civil and political state of Swisserland and a second edition appeared in 1780; Soane also owned the 4th edition of 1801 (q.v.). Includes in vol. I opposite p. 132: 'Geometrical Elevation of the Timber Bridge, at Wettingen from actual measurements' dated January 1789, engraved after a drawing by John Soane who had visited Switzerland to study the wooden bridges on his return from Italy in May 1780 (see Du Prey, Soane, pp. 103--4).
