First published in 1789 (q.v.). This is the first edition to include the historical sketch and notes on the revolution. Half-title present in vol. III only. The plate in vol. I inserted at p. 137 'Geometrical Elevation of the Timber Bridge, at Wettingen from actual measurements' engraved after John Soane by Medardus Thoenert is numbered for p. 132, as in the first edition, and is reproduced in: Angelo Maggi and Nicola Navone (eds.), John Soane and the wooden bridges of Switzerland: architecture and the culture of technology from Palladio to the Grubenmanns, exh. cat., Soane Museum, London, 2003, p. 109, cat. no. 48.
