Anonymous. Advertisement to the reader signed 'Thomas Pennant'. The author was a naturalist, traveller and writer, best known for his work Of London, first published in 1790 (q.v.), copies of which were frequently grangerized (or 'pennantized') with extra illustrations. In later life Pennant also compiled twenty-two manuscript volumes of imaginary travels throughout the world, based on his own experiences and those of others. The volumes on India drew on the writings of the cartographer James Rennell (1742--1830). Two further volumes on China and Japan were published posthumously in 1800. Frontispieces etched by J.W. Tomkins after J. Daniell pinxt; other plates by F. Chesham after 'Barlow' and 'Medland' after William Hodges; the map in vol. II engraved by 'Pahner'. The initial engraved head-pieces in each volume are included in the numbering of the respective lists of plates, but the map is not. ESTC t145965.
