The author travelled to France in 1792 with the Earl of Lauderdale, following the latter's notorious duel with Benedict Arnold, and witnessed the attack on the Tuileries, the September massacres, the rise of the Jacobins, and the humiliation of the French monarchy. Publication of the second volume of his narrative was delayed until he could obtain material on the king's trial. Volume II has a half-title and the imprint reading 'Printed for G.G. and J. Robinson, ...'. The final leaf in vol. II contains an 'Explanation' of the map, which describes General Dumourier's Campaign on the Meuse in 1792. ESTC t144189.
