First published in 1736--44 as An universal history, from the earliest account of time to the present. When the ancient part was completed in 1744 in seven large folio volumes with an eighth volume of additions issued in 1750, it was decided to publish the continuation separately as The modern part of An universal history, first published in 1759--66 (1780--84 ed., q.v.). The 'original authors' include George Sale, George Psalmanazar, Archibald Bower, John Campbell, John Swinton, etc. With engraved maps, plates (many of architectural subjects), and genealogical charts by E. Bowen, C. Grignion, Blundell, James Basire, J. Clark and others. Volumes X--XVII are dated 1780; vol. XVIII is dated 1781. The imprint varies slightly after the first five booksellers' names. Binding Late C18th calf, gilt-ruled and dotted spine with gilt-tooled sunbursts in the compartments, red morocco spine-labels including the brief contents of each volume. Uniformly bound with the companion edition of The modern part of An universal history, 1780--84 (q.v.).
